Birdhouses installation

For the professional ornithologists or amateurs, we are pleased to inform you that in association with Ornithological Development Argenteuil, around thirty birdhouses were installed in our paths of the Sentiers des Pioneers and the Sentier Denommé.

The preparation for the inventories of the spring will be made towards in the middle of April 2018 and the beginning the inventories would take place from the end of April, 2018. If inventories of winter or night birds are wished, the preparation would be made then ideally in December, 2017 before the snowfall to be able to make the inventories from January 2018 (winter inventories) or in the end of February, 2018 (inventories of night birds).

We must add that night birds have a detectability very different from other birds due to their behavior and their rhythm of life. It is very difficult and rare to count them during the inventories of standard birds and thus are very often absent or under represented there. Consequently, the inventories for these species must be adapted to reflect this reality.

The detection is mainly made in the listening and by detecting the answers obtained during sound transmissions of shouts at any end of the afternoon and at the beginning of the evening. The main species which can be detected in this way are for your sector owls and owls, nightjars (of America and rotten wood) and the Woodcock of America. It should be noted that all these species are or very sensitive to the human presence OR decreasing number marked for several years in Quebec.

We shall proceed during spring to develop areas to facilitate you the observation.
